The show of hands appeared in favour of aiessrs. May, A. O’Neill, Donovan and Dignan. A Poll was demanded for aiessrs, Taylor and Hill. The proposers and seconders, as well as the Candidates themselves made speeches which for the most part, were short, —an indispensable forbearance, for when there were so many to address the meeting, if the speeches had been long, tl e proceedings must have been protracted to a very Inconvenient duration. Short as they were, however, they were so numerous that we cannot attempt to give any of them to-day. The proceedings were varied by Mr. Joseph Robinson, who was in attendance with a long list of questions on political, social, and ecclesiastical “ things in general,” which, with indomitable perseverance, he proposed to the Candidates as they successively presented themselves. Some answered them in a single compendious sentence; some more in detail; and some not at all. Once or twice the patience of the assembly seemed nearly exhausted, but the day was fine, and good-humour in the ascendant. Ultimately the infliction was brought to a close by some of the candidates for the Northern Division declining to be “ put through their facings” by an interrogator who had no vole in that Electoral District. A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer for the manner in which the business of the day had been conducted, having been moved by Dr. Campbell, seconded by Mr. Robert Mitchell, and cordially agreed to, the proceedings terminated. This day the polling for the City, and the Suburbs will take place, between the hours of nine and four, at the Market House in Shonland street. The polling for the Northern Division is fixed for the Ist of August, at the Police Office.
A Government Gazelle was issued yesterday. As we intend to transfer to our columns on Saturday all of its contents possessing general interest, a brief summary will suffice 10-day. First are Lists of accepted Tenders for Hospital Provisions (J. Simms and C 0.,) Rations for tlie Gaol, etc., (M. Dinnin,) Miscellaneous Articles (J. Harp), and Provisions for General Purposes (J. Simms and C 0.,) Tenders arc invited for Stationery, and for Ihe purchase of a Bill of Exchange on England, drawn hy the Governor on the Land and Emigration Commissioners for 195/. 18s. Cd. at 30 days sight. Three pages are occupied by a Return of Private Sales of Crown Lands at the Colonial Treasury, during the quarter ending June 50. Il is most satisfactory, as an index to the prosperity of the district, to find that those “Private” Sales amounted to 4,570/. 10s. 9d.
Equally encouraging is the Return of the last Quarter’s Exports of New Zealand Produce from the Port of Auckland. The declared value was 24,439/. The largest items are,— Timber—sawn, 7,077/.; and Potatoes, 5,750/. The declared value of the Imports of Live Slock and Provisions at Auckland during the quarter was 12,019/. 2s. od. The Coasting Trade maintains its importance. During the quarter, 151 vessels, of 5171 tonnage, entered our port, bringing Produce valued at 15,719/. 13s. 6d. A remarkable item is Wheat, the import of which coastwise was 13,869} bushels valued at 6.934/. 15s. Od.
The Emigration Officer’s Return shows an excess of Immigration, over Emigration during the quarter, amounting to 9-4. The numbers arc, Immigrants 384; Emigrants, 200.
The remainder of the Gazelle is occupied by Returns from the Ports of Russell and Mongonui, and accounts relating lo the affairs of deceased individuals, published by the Receiver of Intestate Estates.
