Coal. —lt has been matter of some surprise—that with the abundant indications of the existence of Ibis most valuable mineral in various parts of the country —the oiler of a Reward of 400J for the discovery of an available Field, made some months since by a "liberal gentleman in our neighbourhood, lias not sooner been claimed. Wc arc gratified to learn, however, that now an application has been made by the Native Chief Paluone, Thomas Walker’s brother, who claims, on account of a discovery at Tawharanui, or Omaha, Dear the island of Kawau, and on the other side of the same neck of land on which the experiments to procure “ Matakana Coal ” were formerly conducted. From what we have heard, there seems little doubt that the Coal produced by Paluone Is of excellent quality, and the chief point now to be ascertained is whether it can beobtainedin sufficiently large quantity. The place is so near Auckland, and the facilities of water conveyance are so great, that if it should prove abundant it will be a benefit of incalculable value to the city and district.
His Excellency Lieutenant-Governor Wynyard left Auckland yesterday by the schooner Bon Accord , to visit the Coromandel district.
