C O A L. To Frederick Whitaker, John Salmon, and W. S. Graiiame, Esquires. /GENTLEMEN, —The Cropping out "of Coal in several places, both to the North and South of Auckland, seems to indicate the existence of extensive Coal-fields in the Northern District of New Zealand. Seeing the probability of Steam Communication being established by way of Panama, between England and lhe Australasian Colonies, I know of nothing which would more certainly contribute lo the advantage of the Port of Auckland and its neighbourhood, than the discovery, within a convenient dis tance, of Coal suitable for purposes of Steam navigation. In the hope of promoting this object, I shall have much pleasure in placing at your disposal lhe sum of One Hundred Pounds, to be paid to the person who, within Six Months from this dale, shall discover a Seam of Coal, which, in point of quality and locality, (as to distance and accessibility) shall, in your opinion, be of practical value to the Port of Auckland for the purposes of Steam Navigation. I shall be glad to leave it to yourselves to make any further explanations which you may think it desirable to add, with a view to Lhe attainment of the desired object. I have the honour to be, September 15lh, 4852. The Undersigned, to whom the above Leter was addressed, arc prepared to pay the Sum of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS lo the irst person who shall discover and make mown to them, within the lime limited, a seam of Coal equivalent, in their opinion, lo he above description. They also pledge hemselves to use their best endeavours to ecure to the Discoverer the right of working he Seam, if he should desire it. Fred. Whitaker, John §almon, W. S. Graiiame. uickland, Sept, IGth, 1852.
