Seeing the probability of Steam CommuI nication being established by way of Panama, between England and the Australasian Co- ' lonics, I know of nothing which would more certainly contribute to the advantage of the t Port of Auckland and its neighbourhood, than the diseo\ery, within a convenient distance, of Coal suitable for purposes of Steam navigation. In the hope of promoting this object, 1 t shall ha\e much pleasure in placing at your disposal the sum of One Hundred Pounds, to be paid to the person who, within Six. Months from this dale, shall diseo\er a Seam of Coal, which, in point of quality and locality, (as to distance and accessibility) shall, in )our opinion, be of practical \alue to the Port of Auckland for the purposes of Steam Navigation. I shall be glad to leave it to yourselves to make any further explanations which you may think it desirable to add, with a view to the attainment of the desired object. I ha\c the honour to be, § September 13th, 4852.

The Undersigned, to whom the above Letter was addressed, arc prepared to pay the ! Sum of ONE HUNDRED POUNDS to the J first person who shall diseo>er and make known to them, within the lime limited, a Seam of Coal equivalent, in their opinion, to the aiune description.
