I'KOCT.AMAriON. By His Excellency Sir Charles Augustus Fitzßoy, Knight Companion of the Royal Hauovei inn Guelphic Order, Governor-General of »II Her Majesty's Aus>iralian Possessions, and Cnpt.-Genprnl and Governor-in-Chief of the Territory of New South Wales and its Dependencies, &c, &c, &c. WiirutAs it has been represented to mo that ceitam British subjects, resident in the Fefgee Islandu, have for some time past been accustomed to make purchnses of native women from their relatireH, and to keep thorn in a state of slavery ; and whereas such practice is highly injurious to the Biitish name and character, and is in violation of the statue passed by the Imperial Parliament of Great Britain for the suppression of glavory, and ought, therefore, to be peremptorily repressed : Now therefore, I, Sir Charles Augustus Fitz Roy, the Govornor-GenerM aforesaid, do hereby, on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, proclaim and de« clare the said practice lo be a violation of thi* said Acts of the Jmperir.l Parliament, and a scandal (o the British name and character; and I hereby warn nil British subjects resident in the Feegee Islands, and elsewhere within the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court* of thp several Australasian Colonies, who shall be found offending in manner aforesaid, that they will be prosecuted for such their offences with tho utmost nirour of the lair. Given under my band nnd seal,*at Government House, Sydney, this third day of July, in tlia year of our Lord one thousand pight hundred and fifty-two, in the sixteenth year of Her Majesty's Reign.
