To the Editor of the New Zealander.
Sik. — In your issue of Wednesday la"t, I observe a letter from one of the co-proprictois of the New Zcalonder, in which the following paragraph occurs: "Several of these gentlemen who ha\e been connected with the New Zeahavlerin the Edu>ir>l rapacity are still in the colony, to whose testimony I can confidently appeal against the charge which the Cross has seconded of Government Influence having been exercised over them in the discharge of their Editorial duties." I think it due to Mr. "Williamson to render my personal testimony to the truth of his assertion, so far as regards the period during which the New Zealander vas under my management. The leaders were, by written agreement, under my m-Io control. It was -scry seldom that the proprietor suggested any alteration ; but I placed so much reliance on his judgment as generally, though not always, to acquiesce. I should likewise mention having more than once observed to the proprietor that in certain instances 1 should have spoken more stronoh , but for fearing to do him an injury, he being printer for the Government at the time. The proprietor's answer was upon each occasion the same, — requesting that I should not be biassed by any such consideration.— l am, Sir, yours, &c, Mr.TOIKOS. [The Proprietors acknowledge their grateful sense of the honourable candour with which the abo\c statement has been volunteered.]
