We understand that the American ship Alexander has been chosen as the vessel to convey the officers and crew of the wrecked French corvette Alcmene from this poi t. The Alexander takes her interesting living cargo in the fiist instance to Tahiti, but is then to proceed to , France, should such be the decision of the Commandei of the French Naval Force at that station. The sums to be paid for this service aie htated to be „£ 1,200 to Tabm j — £3,000 should the further voyage to Fiance be required. The Daniel Webster is advertised in the Sydney Heiald of the 21st ultimo, to sail for Auckland in a few days. T-he Emigrant, ship, cleared out at Sydney for Ilokianga on the 20th ult.

Whales. — On Wednesday last a number of whales was seen at Mahurangi Habourj and we are gratified to leain from Air. John Sullivan of that placp, (one of our old coasting traders) that lie in company with another European and some natives, succeeded after an exciting chase in securing two of those visiters to their waters. The value of the capture has been estimated at £300. Mr. Sullivan had frequently seen " the monsters of the deep,'' about Mahurangi before, but was not provided with the instruments and gear necessary for the pursuit until now. The numbers of whales almost constantly seen about our coast undoubtedly offer a fine field for enterprise which we trust to 6ee at no distant day more fully occupied.
