WiJDNCSD \Y, MAKCH 5, 1851. Hi* Ilonot the Chief Justice attended this Morning nnd proceeded to pass sentence on the several prisoners co victed on the three previous days. Peter Moore, found guilty of stealing wearing apparel—Six months imprisonment in Auckland Gaol, at hard labour. Ann Lamb and Mary Martin — Stealing articles of wearing apparel, bed clothing, &c, from a native woman— Twelve months imprisonment at hard labour. Jghn McGregor — Stealing two coats, two pairs trowsers, and a waistcoat from Isaiah Crowther — To be transposed for seven years; and for stealing a tilver watch from William Bacon— transported for aeven ye,irs, to be computed from the termination of the farmer sentence Francis Butcher — for manslaughter—To be transported for the- term of his natural life. Hcke— (Sandwich Islander) for manslaughter—To be transported for the term of his natural life. Thomas Sutherlanw — for assault and ill treating a nativv, — Eighteen months imprisonment at hard labour. This terminated the present Criminal Sittings.

Civil Sittings. Fkiday, March 7, 1851. Before His Honor Chief Justice Martin. Salmon v Pickering. Mr. Bartley appeared on behalf of the defendant, W. P. Pickering, and stated that this was a suit which was commenced at Wellington, but at the making up of the is^e there, the time and place of trial had been fixed for 7th March at Auckland. The defendant's Solicitor at Wellington, Mr. Ross, had retained him, Mr. Bartley, and forwarded his brief with instructions to proceed to trial if the cause ihould be set down by the plaintiff. The cause had uot been set down, and the present application was for costs of the day. Motion granted* William Wheeler v Robert Graham. This was an action to recover i?2B ss. Od. the sum alleged to be due from defendant to plaintiff for work and labour done and supplied, and for money paid and advanced for defendant, and also for salary from 9th November, 1848, to September 17th, 1850. The son of the plaintiff, Allen Wheeler, and Mr. James Henderson were examined on behalf of the plaintiff, and Mr. James Macky and Mr. William Hendeison, on the behalf of the defendant.— Verdict for defendant. Mr. Mernman, for plaintiff; Mr. Whitaker, for defendant.
