[advertisement.] To the Editor of the Ncio Zcahndcr.

SIR, — We beg to call your attention to the fact of an advertisement appearing in the columns of this week's papers, offering Mutton for sale at 1 d. per lb. cheaper than the Butchers. The public may feel surprised at this, and give us credit for extorting more than a fair price for our meat, but Avhen we inform them that one of the parties concerned (John Styak) receives ten shillings per day from the public themselves, and that they find him a Government horse a<jd. fonige to be used in carrying on his Butcher's "business, — the wonder will at once cease. The Butchers of Auckland have already had sufficient pains and penalties inflicted on them, — what with slaughtering at Epsom, and the lessening Hie value of the property on which they had buiit slaughterhouses j — without Government officers entering into competition with them, under such different advantages as before mentioned. In the hopes of this meeting the eye of the proper authorities we have addressed you, and rather than the public should be gulled by the temporary reduction, whilst a few sheep are killed off, we will also reduce the price j the object of their advertising not having been the benefit of the public in any way. Qy. — Who attends to Mr. S 's official duties at Olahuhu whilst busy in the butchering at Auckland? We wish that you, Sir, would make some comments on the conduct of the Government, and others in the matter of our business lately. Denis McCarthy. A. Pollock. Auckland. Feb. 18, 1860.
