Trades, Callings, &c., in the Town and District of Auckland.
The List of Men within the Town and District of Auckland liable to serve on Juries for the year 1851-2, published in the Government Gazette, gives an enumeration of their respective Trades or Callings, which furnishes statistical information with regard to the occupations exercised within the limits included by it, which may be of some interest here, and even more so to those at a distance who feel concerned in the condition and progress of this Settlement. We have, on this account, been at the pains to analyse the List, so as to group together the numbers attached to each particular Trade, &c, giving them as they are set forth in the official List. In such a document there must almost necessarily be some want of complete accuracy, as more than one avocation is not unfrequently pursued by the same individual ; and, moreover, it is not always easy to draw a perfectly distinct line of demarcation between one branch and another of business ; but the List makes as near an approach to full correctness as under the circumstances could be expected, and unquestionably furnishes a considerable amount of general information on the subject For the better understanding of this information it may be well briefly to recall to recollection the provisions of the law in. operation as regards the qualification of persons liable to serve on Juries. An Ordinance passed in 1841. (Sess. 11., No. 3.) enacted a property qualification, only such persons being qunlified as had to their own use a freehold estate in lands or tenements within the colony ; but a subsequent Ordinance (Se&s. 111., No 2, 1844) suspended this enactment, on the ground that the Registration of titles to land was not yet sufficiently advanced for its purposes. At present the liability extends to every man, (except those belonging to the classes specially exempted), between the ages of 21 and 60, who is a British subject, and not an aboriginal Native — (Natives being excluded except under certain provisions) — , and who is "of good fame and character." But no man is qualified to serve who has been convicted of treason, felony, or p i rjury, unless he has received a free pardon. . . . The exempted classes are, Members of the Legislative C ouncil ; persons holding office by appointment of the Governor ; Judges and Ministerial Officers of the < ourt ; Coroners, Gaolers, and ( onstables ; Military and Naval Officers on full pay ; Ministers of Religion ; Barristers, Physicians, Surgeons, and Apothecaries in actual practice ; Revenue Officers; licensed Pilots; and all Masters of yessels actually employed in the service of Government. TiißEr. Kings' Native School. — In an account of an Examination held at this interesting and flourishing Institution which appeared in our columns in the latter part of November, we stated that a new and much la ger School Room was in progress of erection, mainly by ihe aid of funds granted for the purpose by the Governor-in-I'hief. We learn with pleasure that this important and much needed addition to the Establishment has been completed, and was opened on Monday last, when Divine Seivice was conducted in the new Building, and a Sermon preached in the Maori language by the Rev. Thomas Huddle. The friends of Native Education will rejoi'-e that increased facilities have thus been affoided for the carrying out of the admirable Training System which Mr. Reid, under less advantageous circumstances, had already brought into operation with such beneficial results.

The Annual Dinner of the Society, it will also be observed, is to take place at the Exchange Hotel on Thursday, — Percival Berrey, Esq., to preside.
