H.M.S. Steamer " Acheiion."— The Otat>o News of the Bth of June has the following notice of the recente xploring trip of this vessel:— '■ H.M.S. Acheron, Capt Stokes, arrived from the southward on Tuesday last, having been absent about 1 1 weeks. The princi pal part of this time was passed at New River, where exploring parties were sent to Jacob's River, the Bluff and towards the source of the New River Mr Hamilton and Mr. Spencer left the AcHRRONand proceeded overland to the Molyneux, which they reached on the 6th day The country through which they passed is described as one extremely favourable to pastoral pursuits, but rather scarce of limber. After a stay of a few days in the Molineux district, finding the Acheron did not make her appearance, they started for Duneden, and arrived here a few day* ago ; thus accomplishing a journey of nearly 2UO miles, the greater part through a country seldom if ever traversed by Europeans. We believe the Acheron did not make anyjlengthened stay nt the Molineux, but will possibly return there in spring, for the purpose of taking an accurate survey of the bay and the bar at the entrance of the river." The Wellington Spectator of the 26th ultimo adds the following luller inlormation :— <l In our last we extracted from the Otago News a short notice of H.M.S. steamer Acheron. We are glad to be able to famish our readers, in addition to what has been previously stated, with the following sketch of the progress of the surveys of the Middl*. Island by the officers of that vessel under the direction of Captain Stokes. During the months of March, April, and May the Acheron has been principally employed in Fouveaux Straits and about Stewarts Island, 'ihe coast from Ot*go to Preservation Harbour has also been examined, thus completing the shore* of N. and E. coasts of the Middle Island from Cape Farewell to Preset vation Harbour. The various ship harhours of Stewart'g Wand, with those of the Bluff and New River, have been completely surveyed, and the navigation ofFouveaux Straits cleared of many of the dangers which by the old charts would alarm the stranger. We are gratified to learn that the positions of this portion of New Zealand laid down by Captain Cook have been proved to be nearly correct in every instance, though the received charts which have been amended since his time are greatly in error An extensive tract of country from Jacob's River to the Molineux district (near Otagoj has been examined by a land party and found to offer many advantages for a settlement ; it has been ascertained that there are not less than half a million of acres of fine available agri» cultural land, and at least the same quantity available for pastoral purposes The officers and crew have returned in excellent health, which speaks well for the climate at this late period of the year when much inclement weather has been experienced."
