DESCRIPTION OF SCHOONER HELEN. Brigantine rigged.
Length — In deck from inner stem to inner stern post, 71 feet one-tenth. Breadth — In midships, 17 feet three-tenths; depth of hold, 7 feet; carvel built; (fiddle head made of cedar), registered 69 1412-3500 tons ; she has two quarter houses with, water closets in each, the starboard closet forward, and the port one Aft of the sleeping berths ; there is a communication from the starboard vea'er closet to the after cabin by means of a tiap hatch with comings, &c. ; it is very probable the quarter house may be taken down. She was formerly a thtee-tnasted schooner; the partners and step of the mizjn-mast are now stand, ing. She has a very large main hatch, commencing a very little abaft the foremast, a winch just abaft the combings of the hatch, the sides of which are secured below into ihe side of the beam, two pumps bcfoie the mainmast, just abaft the winch bitts, two skylights — one before, and the other abaft the companion —a beam runs across the main skylight in the cabin ; the companion is rounded up from aft to forward, opening aft with brass hook and eye hinges painted over ; a skylight abaft opening on each side with brass binnacle fitted in the skylight, lit from below, with transparent card ; she has, however, other compasses. The rail is doubled from the round-houses to the forepar): of the fore rigging, the catheads rather slight ; deck"!, narrow planking ; the caboose, Russell, Sydney Foundry, as also the windlass palls. Two boats : the {longboat marked Holdsworth, upon the starboard side of the stem. There is a cedar handrail, and a flight of cedar stairs leading down the companion turning to the port side; the cabin is fitted all round with lockers, and the table is composed of two lockers, the one for bread and the other for flour, lined with galvanized iron. Unc'er the table are two trap doois, one on the starboard, and the other on the port side; there is also a chain cable coiled down under the main and after cabins as ballast. Four hanging diagonal iron knees in the hold, two of a side. Two iron bands rounu the step of the main-mast, one before and one abaft; the rigging is set up with dead eyes on the rail, some much larger than the others. Fore scuttle just abaft the windlass, the galley standing before the foremast. The comings of the main hatch stand considerably above the beam leaving a large space not filled up. She is covered with galvanised iron ; seti very low in 1 the water. All loose wood work branded Inder, and the ironwork, $ scrapers, &c, punched Jf .
DESCRIPTION OF THH MEN. James Wilson, ringleader, height about 5 feet 6 inches ; fresh complexion ; light brown hair ; blue eyes, very white teeth : supposed to be a native of Salem ; formerly belonging to the American brig Tim Pickering ; afterwards mate of the cutter James and Amelia, from Sydney to Tahiti ; then mate of the Castlereagh schooner, wrecked at the Sandal Wood Islands ; after which mate, and then master of the Lousia barge ; fiom thence master of the schooner Helen ; he generally carries his head a little on one side when walking, always so wheu speaking, aged about 28 years. Joseph Lucas, formerly of the barque Woodstock, from Manila ; afterwards in the Thistle schooner, in the coasting trade of the colony ; aged 28 ; height 5 feet 10 inches, complexion dark, eyes brown, hair brown and curly ; marked in the lower part of the left arm with woman and anchor in blue ; marked also on the lower right arm supposed to be similar, acting as mate. James Thomas Gregory, a«ed about 28 ; height 5 feet 7 inches, complexion dark, eyes brown, hair brown ; marked with a bracelet on each wriit, a flower pot on one arm, and the other a man and woman with JTG between ; formerly pasienger per Agricola from London. Henry Atkins, alias Henry Austin, aged about 38; height about 5 feet 5 inches, complexion fresh, eyes blue, hair light brown, crucifix on the right arm, left f>rm man and woman, and HW two flags croised and GA; well known by the residents at Auckland, Nevr Zealand, master of a coaster, a very infamous character. John Johnson, height 5 feet 6 inches ; age 30 ; coim plexion fresh, eyes blue, hair light brown ; scar in the side of the upper lip, short and thick set. Thomas Ross, age about 45 to 50 ; height about 5 feet 10 or 11 inches, rough open complexion, eyes light blue, hair light, very round shouldered, very awkward manner with him ; formerly cook of the Louisa, wrecked on the Brunswick River. John Ryan, ship carpenter, age about 26 or 28 ; height about 5 feet 7 inches, complexion light, hair light brown, eyes blue ; crucifix on lower left arm thus f, formerly in the Sarah Ann, Captain Dunuett, from Manilla. Michael Crawley, age about 35 years ; height 5 feet 5 inches, complexion fair and full face, hair flaxy, eyes blue ; keeper of a sailors' boarding house in Kingstreet, Sydney. liaac Painter, cook ; height about 5 feet 8 inches, age about 35, complexion dark, eyes grey, hair dark and curly; formerly a soldier; servant to Lieutenant
