C, A. Dillon, Civil Secretary. EXTRACT FROM BRIGADE ORDERS. Auckland, 4th April, 1850. The first Inspection of the New Zealand Enrolled Pensioners having been concluded, under the Superintendence of Lieuten-ant-Colonel W\n7aud, C. 8., Commanding the 58th Regiment, and the result having been submitted to His Excellency the Major-General Commanding in New Zealand, in a most favourable and satisfactory report. Major-General Pitt feels it his duty to expiess both to the Officers, Non Commissioned Officers, and men, his unqualified approbation and wannest thanks for their steady behaviour and soldierlike demeanour daring the time that they have been called out for exercise. Considering the veiy limited period the force has had for training for the last three years, (only eight days in all), great credit is due to the Commanding Officers of both Battalions, since they must have exerted much ciiciunspection, and judicious encouragement to have enabled them to bring their corps into the field, in such a high state of military discipline. The Staff Officers of Divisions are also entitled to much praise for the great zeal displayed by them during the training days at Squad Drill, &*c, &c, which attention contributed so much to the steady and soldierlike appearance of the Battalions under arms. In conclusion, the Major-General directs that the Commanding Officers will assure the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of their respective Battalions, that the entire satisfaction of His Excellency at the result of this inspection, has been duly reported to the highest authority. By Command, (Signed) J. Greenwood. Major of Brigade. True Extract, J. Greenwood, Major of Brigade.

I especially approve of the manner in which you have introduced into one of these proclamations the principle of elective management of Crown Lands, and I trust that it may tend eventually to all the benefits which you have so clearly pointed out as likely to attend that arrangement. I have, &c, &c, (Signed) Grey. To Governor Sir George Grey, &c, &c.
