THE LATE CAPTAIN STANLEY. {From the Sydney Herald, March 21.)

The following brief memoir of the services of the lnte Captain Stanley will be rend with interest by his nu merouß Australian friends : — Owkn Stanley, Captain It N., F.R.S., F.R.A.S., bom l3tb June, 1811, was the eldest son of the lnte Right Reverend Edward Stanley, Buhop of Norwich, by Catherine, daughter of the Rev. Oswald Leyceiter, Rector of Stoke, Salop, the nephew of Lord Stanley, of Alderley. He entered the Royal Naval College s'h August, 1824, and embarked Bth Janurry, 1826, as a volunteer on board the Druid frigate, Captain Sam Chambers, stationed in the Channel. In the following March he became midshipman of the Ganges, 81, fiiting for the flag of Sir Robert William Otway, Com-mander-in-Chief in South America, where he removed in December, 1829, to the Tartar, 44, Capt. Jeremiah Coghlan ; and in January, 1830, joined the Adventure, aloop, Captain Phi'ip Parker King, employed in surveying the Straits of Magellan. Returning to England in ihe ensuing November, he was next, having passed his examination 28th June, 1830, no minatsd 1 lth March and Bth June, 1831, mate of the Belvidera, 42, and Rainbow, 28, Captains flon. He left the latter shi,) 4ih July, in the hanae year, having been advanced at home lo the r«nk of Lieutenant, by a commi«sion bearing date 14th May, 1831, and he was snbsequently appointed 1 8th July, ami 19th October, 1831, 22nd October, 183', and 28'h March, 1834, to the Kenl, 78, Captain hamml Pym ; Procris, 10, Captain John Tlioma* Talbot ; Malabar, 74, Captain Hon. Joceline Peicy ; the M.tstiff, 6, Lieutenant Commander Thomas G reaves, all in the Mediterranean; llih May, 188G, to the Tciror, bomb, Captain George Black j and 21st !

In the Mastiff, he assived in surveying (he Gre cian Archipelago ; and in Die Terroi he had charge of the aitronotnical and maguetir.il oilmen at'ons during the Polar expedition which sailed fioiu the Orkney!, 23rd June, 1836, and returned to I^ru^h Swi'.ly 3 d September, 1837. Between thc^o d'irs he nude a survey, for the Mist time, of the iioiti- -('rn'ern shoie of Southampton lslund, accompanied with tumour views of the coast. While in the Rrittom >rt, in which veisel he remained until 27th April, 1813, CapUin .ctunley, whose promotion to the rank of Commander cook place 2Gth March, 1839, aided in forming the colony ot Port Ensington, made a track survey of the Arnfura Si*a, and visited and surveyed various harbours in New Zealand and thf Tcnnasseriin provinces. He at« taiued the rank of Post Csp'ain 23rd Septcmbei, 18 14, and since 20th September, 1846, hua bfrn in command of the Rattlesnake, surveying vessel, in which ship he has made many additions to hydrography, among the princip.il of which trny be mentioned the aurvey of Simon's Bw, of the inner route through Torrei Straits, fiom DunU Island to Illigli's Farewell, (on a large scile), and his last work the .survey of the south-east coast of New Guinea, and the Louiiiade Archipelago. He was a Fellow of the Royal and Astronomical Societies, and was fond of scientific pursuits generally ; but bis whole energies were given to the important services with which he was pntrusteil by ilia Lords Commisioners of the Admiralty ; aid he died when he had successfully completed them, and was looking forward to the reward in the approbation of his country and friend?.
