STEAM COMMUNICATION.
The Steam Communication between England and New South Wales may now be considered as settled. The following despatches received by Hii Excellancy ihow that all the powers for making definite arrangements have been granted, and that noth ng remains except to give a practical effect to the conditions. Once these are carried out it will be neccessary to contiuue it on to this colony by an arrangement with the company if possible ; if not by some such as that which we men* tioned a few numbers since as offered by Mr. Boyd. We are assured that by one or other it is His Excellency's determination to extend the inestimable benefit of Steam Communication to this colony — Downing Street, 30th November, 1848. Sir — With reference to former correspondence on the subject, I transmit to you herewith for your information the enclosed copy of a Despatch which I have addressed to the Governor of New South Wales notifying that an arrangement was about to be concluded by her Majesty's Government with the India and Australia Steam Packet Company, provided it should be made to appear that the Company were able to perform such a contract for the conveyance of the mails between Singapore and Sydney. A proposal for the establishment of communication with Australia via the Cape by means of sailing ve»sels with icrew propellers is still under the consideration of Her Majesty's Government. I have, &c, (Signed) Grey, Lieutenant- Governor Sir William Denison.
