" Under all the circumstances of the case, therefore, and relying on the piudence, judgment, and ability which have distinguished your general administration, I have not hesitated to advise Her Majesty to sanction the issue of the Crown Titles which you have given to the Claimants." Sir, I have received your despatch No. 7. of the 9th March last, transmitting a petition addressed to the Queen, by various inhabitants of Auckland and its vicinity, including the Bishop, the Chief Justice, and various public officers, praying that Her Majesty would be pleased to revoke theinstru:tions of the Secretary of State, that relate to the appropriation of any lands claimed by or in possession of the Natives, by other means than that of simple purchase as provided by the Treaty of Waitangi, and that Her Majesty would be pleased to direct that the utmost publicity be given to a renewed assurance to the native Chiefs, that Her Majesty never did contemplate, and never will permit the solemn engagements entered into between them and Her Majesty's representatives, to be evaded or set aside ; but that the spirit as well as the letter of the provisions of the Treaty of Waitangi, affecting the lands of the aborigines, should be most religiously maintained. You will acquaint the petitioners that I have laid their petition before the Queen, who was pleased to receive it very graciously i and in answer to the prayer of it, 1 am commanded to refer to the repeated assurances which you have already r< ceived from Her Majesty** Government, that no intention has existed on the part of Her Majesty's Government, to interfere with any rights seemed to the Natives of New Zealand by the Treaty of Waitangi. TENDERS— QUEEN STREET. Colonial Secretary's Office, Auckland, January 23rd, 181-9. RENDERS will be received at this Office, •■■ until noon on Monday, the 12th "February, from parties desirous of undertaking the Earth work in the repair and construction of the Roadway in Queen street, from the Court- , house to high, water mark. Tenders will be also received, at the same time and place, from parties desirous of laying down certain Drains in the same street, t Plans and sections, with specifications of he several works to be performed, may be seen on application to the Superintendent of Roads at the Survey office, from whom any information on the subject may be obtained. As security for the due performance of these works, within the period stated in the specification, is an indispensable condition, each tender must be accompanied by a notification of the consent of the parties proposed as sureties. Tenders to be in dupli cate, sealed, and endorsed, " Tenders for Earthwork in the repair and construction of Queen-street," or " Tenders for certain drains in Queen -street."
