Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
On Saturday last, pursuant to advertisement, a meeting of Subscribers of this Society was held at the Masonic Hotel, for the purpose of determining its rules, and electing office bearers for the ensuing season. At this meeting, — which may be termed that of the virtual foundation of the Society, — Major Matson presided, and read to the subscribers a code of regulations, which had been prepared by the Provisional Committee for their consideration. The majority of these were adopted without alteration ; and but one or two others were slightly amended, on the suggestion of Dr. Weekes, Messrs. Whytlaw, Atkins, and Joseph. The principal alteration discussed, was in relation to the admission of articles to be exhibited at the Society's Periodical Shows. Messrs. Rough, and AtMns advocated a free admission to all competitors. On the other hand, Dr. Weekes and Mr. Joseph proposed that, although any one might exhibit, the competition for prizes should be restricted to subscribers and natives only : — these gentlemen insisting that if the competition were an open, one, the Society would have no funds to purchase prizes. Cogent arguments were adduced on either side, the Treasury benchers carrying their motion by a very bare majority. The rules having been determiued, the following Officers were elected for the ensuing season. President : Major Matson. Vice-Presidents : A. Shepherd, Esq., and Dr. Weekes. Treasurer : A. Kennedy, Esq. Secretaries : Messrs. Baber and E. Fairburn. Committee: Messrs. Beckham, W. F. Porter, Berrey, Delworth, Rough, Salmon, Whytlaw, Joseph, and Atkins. The Society being thus duly organized, we trust that its functionaries will show themselves in earnest in the cause they have undertaken. Of the benefit to the Colony of which such a society is susceptible there can be no doubt; and we say of it in the language used by the " Sydney Morning Herald," on a like occasion — Floreat !
