The ship Maitland, Captain Gray, arrived at Port Phillip, from London, having left Gravesend, 2nd July, spoke the Ralph Bernal, on the 27th of the same month, also from London, bound for all the 7 ports of New Ze land, with emigrants., The Daniel Watson on her late passage to SydBf j, where she arrived on the 22nd ultimo, spoke the American whaler HannihaU of Sag Harbour, 32 days from Wanganui, and bound likewise for Port Jackson. The ship Thomas Lozury, 409 tons, Captain Graliame, reached Sidney on the 2nd inst., having • left Wellington, on the 7th ult. She encountered a very stormy passage; attempted to beat through Cook's Straits three .distinct times, but was as often blown out j and finally came rouud eastward, experiencing only light aud mostly contrary winds during the rest of the passage. The schooner Ariel, 73 tons, Captain Sturgeon, sailed from Sydney, on the 2nd instant, for the Bay of Islands and Tahiti, with Messrs. W. Dobson, J. JL. Evans, Macor, and A. Bataicke, as passengers, and a general cargo. The brig Lord Hobart having been purchased between 'Captain Sullivan and Mr. M'Gregor for £1200, is to be continued in the New Zealand cattle trade, under the charge of Captain Sullivan. The schooner Comet, 92 tons, Cork, matter } brig Nelson, 1 12 tons, Sedgwick, and bnrque fVa~ verly, 436 tons, Morgan, matter, sailed from Sydney lor Wellington, during the early part of the present ' month. The barque Nimrod, 234 tons, Capt. Espiaasse, left Newcastle on the 19th ultimo,, for Port Nicholson, laden with 211 tons coal, {or the Commissariat, and * general cargo. The barque Woodstock which left Sydney on the 13th ultimo, reached Two-fold Bay on her way to take in cattle for Port Nicholson. " The whaling achooner Alfred, of New Bedford, arrived at Sydney on the 21tt October last, from the Pejee Islands, having left on the 10th Sept., a short time prior to which a severe battle had taken place between the chiefs of Moan and Rewa, in which the latter was defeated, . but escaped with a number of hit adherents to Suva harbour, about seven milet west of Rewa Roadi .where they intended to settle — all the habitations of Rewa having been burnt to the ground by the chief of Mban. The number slain on both tidet amounted to nearly six hundred, the bodies of ' whom atill remained exposed there.
