PORT NICHOLSON.
Our W* llington files received by the Sou venir, which arrived on Tuesday, extend ftom the 14th nk. to ibe Bth inst. The following are extract^ fr">m the " Wellington Independent," of the latter Rnd previous dates :■— His Excellency the Lieutenant-Goveiuor returned from hit trip to the Wairarapa, an Sunda y last. Throughout the journey Mr. Eyre expressed unqualiiied delight at the nature of the country over which he passed. The line of country between the Hutt and Wairarapa is deemed well adapted for the location of Pensioners, and, in all probability, a large portion of the Fencibles intended for (he Southern Province, will be stationed across (he Valley of the Upper Hutt. AH parties concur in praising the line selected for the Wairarapa road. Though hill* are observable, and some of tollable elevation, the journey is accomplished with> out any apparent use throughout the entire distance. In fact, from the bridge, to the top of the range of hills, separating the Hutt from the Wairarapa, the rise in no case exceeds one in twenty feet. The works are to be prosecuted with vigour throughout Wairarapa into Ouridi, that line being intended for the great trunk road to Auckland. The fire at the bat lacks at Porirua, was occasioned by the bricks at the back of the kitchen chimney becoming red hot, and communicating to the wood-work in the room adjoining. Accidentally, but fortunately, the tire was discovered in time to prevent it extending, as in ;i few minutes more it must have reached the powder magazine, when the whole building would have been destroyed. Mr. Alexander rode into town from Wanganuj on Saturday evening 1 , which place he left on the Tuesday previous. None of the rebel party were to be dee!). We are sorry to hear that hooping cough was prevalent, and thai one of Captain Campbells iliildren died iv consequence Many of the residents were thinking of leaving. The coast road appears to be free from interruption. A meeting of merchant*, trailers, and others t"ok place on Mt/nday last, at the stores of Messrs. KidgAvays, Hickson, and Co., respecting the new currency bill. A resolution, appointing Messrs. Hickson, Fit*lierhert, and M* Donald, as a committee to draw up a memorial condemnatory of the intended bill, was unanimously adopted. On Monday evening:, tbe Managers of the Wellington Saving's Bank met at Barrett's Hotel, and resolved to petition against the adoption of the contemplated Savings' Bank Ordinance. C. E. N. Wright, late of U. M. S. Calliope, was arraigned before the Supreme Court, at Wellington, on the Ist instant, charged with embezzling 300 dollars, which he had received into his custody as Paymaster and Purser pf tbafship; and with forging a bill of exchange, with intent to defraud Captain Stanley, the commander and others. The prisoner was acquitted on the first charge, but found guilty of uttering a certificate, purporting to be signed by Capt. • Stanley, with intent to defraud Messrs. Smith & Co. In a third charge of forgery, a verdict of acquittal was recorded. Sentence — 12 months' imprisonment.
