GARRISON SPORTS.
On Yesterday, the Commanding Officer ofUhe-G< Regt., Lieut-Colonel Gold, gave his men a day's amusement on the grounds at Albert Barrack*. < The weather was pleasantly fine, and the assemblage of spectators numerous. Benches were arranged for the accommodation of the ladies, a goodly number of whom honored' the sports with their pretence. Hi* Excellency" the Governor and Mrs 1 . Grey were received on lh& ground by Colonel Gold and Mrs. Gold, Major Wyati and Mrs. Wyatt, the Officers of the regiment, and the assembled gentry ; the band, which 'w&s in attendance, playing a military march as they approached/ The Sports, which consisted" of j Foot and Hurdle Racing, Hurdling, &c, &c, commenced at half-past one; and were kept up till half-past five o'clock. The whole wai conducted by Colonel Gold,, in conjunction with Major Wyatt,. who ooted as Master of the Ceremonies ; and the manner in which the amusements were varied, so as to make them interesting to the spectators, and at the same time exciting to those engaged in them, indicated much judicious arrangement. These 1 ; Sports, we have no doubt, have been set on foot by the Commanding Officer in order to excite a spirit of unanimity and good feeling among the officers and men of his regiment ; arid we believe, from what we observed yesterday of the cordiality and good will which prevailed, that Colonel Gold's indulgence wilL have the desired effect. New Wesleyak Chapel.— A Meeting was held on Monday evening last, in the Wesleyan Chapel, to taka into consideration the propriety; of eredting a new building. After hearing statements. from the chairman and others, the meeting determined that, as demands for accommodation in the Chapel were "becomihg numerous, and were likely to continue increasing with the increase of population, immediate stops should be taken for. the erection of a large Substantial Chapel. A subscription list has been opened," and sumi already subscribed. The building Is to be of stone, and?, will be erected on the ground alongside the piesent, wooden building, which is to be converted into a. School-room. We noticed in our last, that a Subscription was mi progress for the owner of the .Boat; th/it was stolen by the deserters, and we understand that his loss has been nearly covered by the sum collected. We are requested^ to convey his grateful acknowledgments to His Excel-, lency the Governor, {he Naval and Military OiHce«>. and the Inhabitants of Auckland,, for their benevolent assistance so promptly afforded hijii. ' , Kauri Gum.— We understand that experiments are* being made, on bpard the /«/m'We, lo'ascerlam whether kauri gum, combined with ooal, could be used with advantage for steaming. If it answers the purpose, then, indeed, we may expect a steady demand for the gujn which abounds in this part of the Island.
