Merchant Seamen.— Important Order.— An order was issued a short time since hy the commissioners of the Customs, m pursuance of directions to that effect from the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, dnecting that vessels required to carry medicines by the Act of 7 and 8 Victoria, chap. 112, be occasionally boarded by the officers of the Customs, for the purpose of ascert anting; the quantities of medicines shipped for the use of the crew. The following is a copy of the scale of medicines ordered to be adopted by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, under the provisions of the 18th section of the said Merchant Seamen's Act:— Medicines : quantities for 10 men.— Castor oil, lllb. ; Epsom salts, 41b powder ot Jalap, 40z. ; powder of ginger, 20z. ; carbonate of soda, 8oz.; powder of rhubarb, 40z. ; tartaric acid, 8oz.; senna leaves, Goz.: sulphur, 8oz. ; cream of tartar, 8oz. ; nitre, lllbs. ; laudanum, 40z. ; tincture of rhubarb, 8oz.: balsam ot capivi, 8oz. ; opodeldoc, 8oz. ; spirit of hartshorn, 4oz ; paregoric elixir, 40z.; essence of pepermint, loz.; alum, 8oz. ; bluestone, 40z. ; quinine, 4dr. ; calomel, 40z. ; Dovers powder, 20z. ; mustard, lib. ; mercurial ointment, 8oz.; Bullin's blistering fluid, instead of blisteung plaister, 1 bottle; 2 yards ot adhesive plaister; hut 40z. ; simple cerate, 8oz. ; basciliou ointment, Boz. Note. The pills and powders hereafter mentioned must be carefully put up in tin and leaden boxes, and properly labelled:— Pills : 4oz. purg. (pil. colo. C. Ed Phar.) ; 4doz. blue pills ; 2 doz. opium pills (Phar. Edin.) ; Powders : 2 doz purg., each to contain ldr. of compound powder ot jalap, aud 2 gr. of calomel ; 2 doz. emetic, each to contain 15 gr, of ipecucacuana, and 2<jr. of tartrate of antimony ;2doz. sudorific, each to contain 10 gr. of nitre, 10 gr. of cream of tartar, and sgr. of Dover's powder ; 2doz injection, each to contain 3gr. of the acetate of zinc; 1 set of scales and weights ; 1 marble mortar and pestle ; 3 tile ; 1 graduated measure; 1 funnel; 1 small pewter cup ; 2 pewter teaspoons ; 1 spatula; 1 scissors ; 1 syringe ; 2 lancets : 6 bandages, of different stees ; 6 yards ot calico ; a paper of needles, pins, and thread. The above are the quantities ot medicines to be supplied for ten men, aud are to ne increased proportionally for every additional number of men. By order oi their Lordships. (Signed) Sidney Herbert.
