ALLIED CO-OPERATION.
THE OFFICIAL ATTITUDE. ^ SHANGHAI, March 29. ' The Labour situation in Shanghai has improved, the general strike has ended, and the Post Qffice fias re- ! opened. No serious distui'bances J have occurred. Anglo-American co-operation for i the defence of the settlement is j complete, and similar arrangements J are expected shortly with the au- ! thorities of the French Concession, | which admittedly is a rather weak j spot. These samples of internation--al co-operation may be attributed to the horrible events in Nanking em- i phasising the need for standing to- j gether. Long grapnic accounts of lootings j and murdering in Nanking together t with suggestions in some Chinese correspondents' reports that the foreign communities in outlying cities have heen neglected are still faced with somewhat exaggerated complaisance in official quarters, which emphasise that troubles are always checked as soon as the Cantonese main force arrives in any city. The authorities appear very anxious .to reiterate that incidents like those at Nanking do not provide a valid reason for modifying" the British policy.
