CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. As high as £3 10s has jbeen paid £.ov April and May potatoes, Ihe demand from Auckland! for imrn'ediate delivery being keen. Ruling rates are £3 5s for both j/vompi and fofward delivery. On the whole the market is fairly quiet in spite of a moderate enquiry from Auckland, where the main 4s 3ust coming in. As the local crops ripen a 'greater proportion. is being passed for the northern city. „ Not so much perturbation will be caused growers by the Federal embargo in view of the good crop in Australia. Nevertheless, it is certain to have a moral efFect hej£. One merchant said to-day that he' found the d'emand for forward delivery improving 'but there was a falling off in the demand forvprompt. Local crops are likely to be about on a par with the average of recent years. The season was a little too dry in the late summer for light land. Onjons are quiet at £2 10s, a low price. Auckland has had an exceptionally heavy crop^ and still has plenty for all requirements, so that rhere is no demand1 from there. A parcels. are being railed to Timaru and Dunedin, but the price shows no sign of improving. There is not much life in the seed market. Orders for perennial ryegrass have just about petered out now that the Piako has left. Little movement in peas -caused hy those who had bought here for shipment novering their purchasess has ceased.. Plenty of good chaff is offering at £3. It is exceptionally bright with plenty of weight.. "Anybody (can buy oats but it takes a good man to sell them," said a merchant rr to-day, and this about sums up the position.
