The New Brighton Trotting Club, which made a . profit of £1200 on its Royal meeting, has given £100 to be equally divided among the Summit Road Trust, the river improvemnet scheme, and the New Brighton beach improvement scheme. "It is a most interesting fact that a large city like Dunedin has no gaol," remarked Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., in an address at Auckland. To he won outright this cup must be won three times, not necessarilv consecutively, for the same exhibitor with a different animgl on each occasion. A gold medal will be awarded annually to the winner of the cup, excepting in the year in which it is won outright. The cup is made from genuine William IV. piece of silver of the year 1830. A meeting of the South School !■ Jubilee Committee was held last j evening when . arrangement were made for the celebrations in May. Numerous replies were received from ex-pupils notifying their intention to be present, and a cor.° siderable sum was received towards the expenses. Two birthday cakes, each weighing 3Uhs, were donated by members of the committee. Reports from the various sub-commit-tees showed that everything was well in hand and that a brass baud and an orchestra were being organised hy ex-pupils. It was stated that over 3000 invitations had been sent out, while many more had yet tn he distributed. , v ^ farmer of Big Swamp, near Moorland, in the Wingham district of New South Wales, was surprised recently to find his little puppy among a litter of three pigs. Not merely was it quite at home with the sow, but it appeared to be the favourite of the family. That the puppy had establtshed herself in the good grac§s of the sow was brought home to the farmer when he «*- tempted to separate them. The sow rushed viciously at him, and it was not until he left the sty that sbe became cairn. There was further trouble for him when he sold the sow and her litterl Before they could be rembved the pup had to be placecl in a bag out of sight until the little family of pigs was well out of the way.
