THE DUKE'S FURNITURE.

GOOl) PRICES AT AUCTION. J t'lie salc room of Messrs Park. Reynolds, and Co.'s, Dunedin, was packcd' with men aijd women on Friday afternoon. tlie attraction being the sale by auction of the hou.s»c furnishings usecl by the Duke of York during his visit to Dunedin. The bidding, generally speaking, was brisk. ancl, judging by the prices given for some of the lots, money is not so scarce in Dunedin as some folk \^ish to make out. The privilege of liaving in one's bedroom or sitting room something upon which thc Duke hacl lain, or troddcn or had handled. or even just looked upon. was apparentiy deemed to be worth paying for The goods, of course. were all of Ihe best quality, and practically new. for three days' use can scarcely have depreciated them in value. Eight pairs of blankets were first offered, and for the privilege of snuggling under ancl being made warm by the very same woollen eoverings that had kept the cold from the body of our RoyaJ, visitor, buyers paid £2 8s per paii for each of thc eight pairs, which were of large size. It was a question of faith, reaily, for it cannot he said that our weather was so cold that all eight pairs were needed by His Royal Highness on the three nights of his stay. "The Duke's mattress," a cosy thing of wool and fire, was almost eagerly competed for, and was eventually knocked down for £8. Window curtains brought from £2 to £2 15s a pair; ciderdown quilts from £5 to £6 17s 6d each; floor rugs from £1 to 30s. A super-axminster carpet, 13ft 6in by llsf-t 3in. brought £30, and a smaller square £21. Smaller things brought good prices, and the Public Works Department was doubtless satisfied with Hhe net result of the sale. — "Star.
