A DESIRE FOR AMICABLE SETTLEMENT
CHINESE LEADERS APPROACH ! JAPANESEr j SHANGHAI, March 26. In conlrast to tbe truculent attitude of the Nationalist military representatives at Nanking, ChiangKaishek and Pai-Chinghai profess a desire for an amicable settlement of yesterday's incident at Wohu, A message from Japanese sources states that the former sent to the Japanese consulate a representative who stated that although the cause of the foreign bombardment was unknown the Southerners had no enmity against Britain and America. He added that Chiang-Kaishek, would proceed to Nanking immedintely to settle the incident with full responsibility. He asked that this bo conveyed to the British and American authorities at Nanking, coupled vfath an earnest desire that they should stop the bombardment. Paichinghai, interviewed on the subject, suggested that the blame for Nanking disorders should be placed at the door of the retreating Northerners rather than the Nationalists. He hoped the incident would be liquidated in a peaceful manner which would not_ inflame the Chinese against the foreigners. He confessed that the suppression of plain clothes gunmen was one of the Nationalists' most emharrasing problems. . .
