COUNTY COUNCIL.
' MONTHLY MEETING. The Waitaki County Council met yesterday there heing present: Messrs W. Gardiner (chairman), T. A. Munro, R. B. Meek, A. Mclnnes, D. Clark, J. Rodman and J. G. Newlands. Correspondence. An application for a Iicense for a claim in the Maerewhenua district was received from Alfred Adams, of Tokarahi. — No objection was raised. The secretary of the Dunedin Exhibition forwarded a balance sheet in connection with the Otago Court. — Received. The Public "Works Department forwarded a copy of a letter that had been sent to the town clerk. Timaru, regarding the aljocation of heavy traffic fees for District No. 15. The writer stated that any amendment to the existing regulations would involve complications and difficulties greater tlian it was worth. .The Public Works Department also forwarded a draft copy of consolidated and amended motor lorry regulation which came into force on April 1. Dealing with the same subject the Bruce County wrote stating that they had replied to the Department suggesting that the proposals to bring the regulations into force on April 1 be deferred until time has been given local bodies to go into same, and make any recommendations they might think fit. The Waitaki County's support to the protest was asked. \ The clerk reported that he had attended ,a meeting of the District Highways Council in Timaru and it I was agreed that each council should I alioeate its own fees. He had also pointed out that tourist tratlic dicl an enormous amount of damage to the -roads invthe Ahuriri Riding and the Council did not get sixpence. Mr Munro thought the simplest way out was to have the road used by tourists declared a Government road. He suggested that the Council should meet the Minister . of Public Works with that object in view. j It was left to Messrs Mclnnes and j Munro to see the Minister. The Council decided to support the proposal that each local body should collect its own heavy traffic fees. j Mr . J. C. Stephenson, Tokar'ahi. j aoplied to rent a piece of land at ; the Awamoko Creek for grazing ; purposes. — Granted. A letter was received from Mr B- ! r ounihan drawing the attention of Tie Council to the nuisance caused ; by townspeople dumping rubbish on Caiedonia'n road. Mr Mclnnes: Where is our health j • inspector? | The engineer said if they could j catch any one dumping the rubbish j they could do something. He under- | stood the rubbish had been depositi ed there late at night. i The letter was referred to the health insoector. The application of Mr A. Adams, Tokarahi, to lav a nine inch pipe line at Maerewhenua for mining purposes was granted under the usual conditions. i Mr C. Grant, Otekaike, wrote ask- , ing the .council to provide a road to his homestead. — On the motion of Mr Mclnnes it was decided to ask the Government for a grant towards the cost of the road. A communication was received from Mr R. McQuade, who asked the Council to provide two or three nlanks across the- channel at the foot of the Lingstone pinch. — Granted. Messrs T. and O. Evans, Ngapara, wrote asking that the: road - leading to their property b,!§ gravelled in certain places. — Left to the engineer" to attend to. i Mr J. F. Densem applied to lay water pipes across the road through his farm at Waikaura. — Granted under the nsual conditions. Permxssion to cross the road at Dansey's Pass with a telephone wire was requested in a letter from Mr T. A. Wright. — Granted. Messrs McQueen Bros. (Christchurch) and Appleby and Son (Kurow, forwarded oaymenf of heavy traffic fees and claimed rebates for certain neriods whpn the lorries (were not used. — Held over till next meeting. j Accounts amounting to £1107 ls 2d j were passed for payment. i i General. i Mr P. Gonnell, Hdderfhorpe. waiti ed on the Council and requested ,
that a better supply of water be made available for his property. In view of the lack of water he asked for a reduction of his rates. The chairman informed Mr Gonnell that the work of cleaning out the race was being pushed ahead and if the settlers did nothing, the Council would carry out the work at the expense of the settlers. He had no chance of having his rates reduced. The engineer said they had great trouble with people interfering with the race at the jntake. Mr Newlands suggested that the settlers should form "themselves in- * to a water race board. The chairman remarked that there always would be trouble with the race. Mr Connell then ret'ired and the subject was dropped. _ The. chairman said some of the side roads were getting into a bad state and he. wondered when the grader would be available in his district. The engineer said he was irying i to clean up ss he went along. The ' grader would probably be in Mr ^Gardiners district next week. j Mr Meek said it was regrettable j that they had received no quote for 1 j metal from the Borough Council, al- 1 though it had been asked for last , August. I It was decided to get a quote for , the metal and go ahead with neces- " I sary metalling. ! Mr Rodman asked if there was any replv from the Railway Department regarding the crossing ai Maheno station. The engineer said -thev had . not yet made forriial application for a warning device and the clerk was recruested to attend to the matter. , Replying to Mr Mclnnes, the engineer sa.id nothing had been done ■ about Dansey's Pass, but he would , be visiting the district ^shortly. ; | • County Jubilee. ! The clerk asked when the county j would like to celebrate the jubilee. . It would take the form of a augjmented dinner. ■ | Mr Mclnnes suggested having the dinner in the evening of the day of the next meeting. The chairnian said he was against , the proposal3 because it would only ! be a farce of a thing. If they were \ going to have a banquet it might I be worth while. ; 1 Mr Mclnnes said his idea was to ■ have something placed on record. ! It was decided to hold a dinner ' as suggested by Mr Mclnnes. i i ,
