MAYERS ON TRIAL.

Received Friday, 9.40 p.m. LONDON, March 24. In the charge against Mayers of stealing submarine plans, Mr Fuiton, prosecuting counsel, said Mayers was instructional officer and senior submarine officer at Gosport from August, 1925," till July, 1926. In the latter chpacity he had access to submarine plans without restriction. Mayers failed to pass the promotion examination and was given an oppcrtunity to seek civil employment. He then joined Vickers. Certain plans were missed in March. Captain Brodie, who was responsible, wrote to Mayers asking him if hc knew anything about them. Mayers addressed two letters to Petty Officer Goldsmith, formerly Mayers' secretary. Brodie opened them and one envelope contained the missing plans and the other instructed Goldsmith to place the plans in an of- j ficial envelope, tie red tape round j it, and place the plans in a certain j drawer, produce them from the * drawer, then report their discovery. j Fulton added that other documents j were found in Mayers' office arid j these were being investigated. The Magistrate adjourned the [ case.
