NOTES ON THE RACING.

Hurclles to Atapo. The withdrawal of Coastguard, Shandre ancl Timaru left a field of eight to contest the Autumn Hurdfes. Oriflamb was installed a good favourite, carying 160 tickets morc than Kaikahu. Hard Prince, Oriflamb and Bonatic rose together at the initial obstaclc, and leaving the straight they were making the running from Otapo. At the mile> Hard Prince was just in front of Oriflamb ! with Atapo and Bonatic a couple ' of lengths away. A bad jump at the j baek cost Oriflamb some ground. and passing the six furlong mark Kard Prince was just in front of"

Atapo, Oriflamb and Bonomel still | being next. Kaikahu and Kapuna were some distance behind the field. At the first turn for home there was not much betweeh Hard Prince, Atapo, and Oriflamb. At the foot of the hill Atapo had taken the ' measure of Hard Prince, and Bonomel moved up to second place. Holding his own to the finish, Atapo secured the vprdict by a length and a half from Bonomel, who dcfeated Hard Prince by a couple of lengths. Bonatic was three lengths further back, with Kaikahu and Guncase next. Oriflamb faded out badly at the finish and was almost last. The winner, who is by the Treadmill horse Quarantine, was bred in the North Island, and races in the same interests as the 'chaspr Uncle Bob. A Popnlar Win. The scratching pcncil was freely used in the Novicc Plate. Lucy Lockett was ineligible as a result of hcr Waimate win, and eight others retired, leaving a field of eight. Luthy and Tripaway carried thel hulk of the investments, with Cupid's Dart in most dcmand of the , remainder. Cynelli apparently was placed behind the field by the stnrter, and was squeezcd when moving up just before Ihe tapcs rose. Tripaway (from the, outside), Cupid's Dart and Lady Tractor were quickest to begin, and Tripaway and Cupid's Dart lcd round the bend seve- j ral lengths elegr of Attract. Trip- \ away shook the other two-year-old i off at the foot of the rise, and won j comfortably by a couple of lengths. ; Luthy, who got up on Ihe rails, 1 was a short length behind Cupid's . Dart. Cynelli was a decent fourth, ; well clear of the next hunch. Both { first and second fillers are by Archery, and both look certain to win races. Tripaway is owned by * an Oamaru sportsinan and the win. was a popnlar one. The filly was ontered for the McLean Stakes in the spring, but received a kick at the post at the Oamaru October meeting and had to be snclled for some months.

Won by a Head_ Solrose was taken out of the North Otago Cup in favour of John Bradbury, who had pricked a heel j and was a doubtful starter earlier j in the day. The race was productive j of spirited betting. the favourite ! carrying 624 tickets and the( outi sider of the field being supported i to the tune of 422. Miss Winkie had i most friends, but John Bradbury | and Chickwheat were less than 50 ! chances away. Receipt was chiefly i responsible for a little delay . at j the start, but a good despatch was : effected. Chickwheat, Miss Winkie, j and Mountain Lion were first to ! show out, but going along the back j Receipt made a fast run, and half ! a mile from home she was running neclc and neck with Chickwheat and Mountain Lion. Miss Winkie being at the head of the next hunch. The three leaders were still together at the first turn for the straight but a bit further on Chickwheat lost his place and Mountain Lion commenced to go back, leaving Receipt and Fresco at the head of affairs, with Vaward running into third place. A great finish between Fresco and Receipt ended in favour of the West Coast gelding by a short head, with Vaward a couple of lengths away. .Tohn Bradbury was a good fourth, a neck in Iront of Miss Winkie. Gay Sonnet Again. When Mime was eliminated from the Waikaura Handicap backers displayed no liesitation in electing Gay Sonnet as favourite, the Washdyke filly carrying more than twice as much money as the second choice, Britling. The field race in a bunch for half a furlong - hefore Spode and Gay Sonnet drew out. Gay Sonnet was not long in taldng charge, and she raced round the Ibend three lengths clear of a bunch J piloted by Spode and Peho. At the foot of the rise Gay Sonnet held an advantage of two lengths from j Britling, Peho and Lucy Lockett, and although she appeared to be stopning a bit at the end she won by two lengths from Britling, whoI just managed to stall off Lucy Loc- | kett by a head. Peho was two or ■ three lengths away, followed bj' Eyed Ova, who had been last for most of the trip'. A Favourite Scort,^ Waimate form pointed to Mime (with Emerson up) as a probable winner of the Anniversary Handicap, and the Timaru-owned gelding was sent out 240 tickets in more request tha;n Overhaul. Overhaul from the inside was first to show, but was soon supplanted by Goldtown, Mime and Courtley Rose. At the end of two furlongs Mime, Courtley Rose and Goldtown were j together, just in front of Sweet j Melodv. Goldtown - was done with j two furlongs from home, and a bit j further on Mime dropped Courtley | Rose. Holding his own to the end 1 Mime won by a couple of lengths j from . Fairy Herald, who put in a : good run from the dip and beat All* British, another late comer, by half a length. Courtley Rose was a couple of lengths back, followed by Blue Dragoon and King Sol. Only One Dividend. The Moeraki Handicap, a mile hack event, was reduced to a sin-gle-dividend race by the scratching of Brightling and St. Nicholas. Battle Colours, despite his Waimate failure, was again entrusted with the honour o?. favoqritism, 'the other most in request being Wingatui. Moratorium was responsible for some delay at the barrier, but the field was despatched in good order. Wingatui, Roman Archer and Tholo- • mon were quickest to .begin, but at the end of two furlongs the' order was Roman Archer, Moratorium, Tholomon. At the bend the first two Were well clear of the remainder, but the first turn saw the' field closing up. Battle Colours travelled fast from the dip and turned the final clbow two lengths in front of Wingatui. When -chalJenged, however, he could not respond, and Wingatui carae on to win by a length from Tholomon, who finishe.d fast on the fence and beat Battle Colours by a neck for second money. Moratorium was a moderate fourth.

Rapier's Brilliant Win. Rapier, with the going to his liking, topped the thousand mark in the betting on the Flying Handicap, with Solrose in the seven" hundreds. Lava soon opened up a gap from Eaton Rells, who was several lengths clear of Gold Brick as they raced round Ihe bend. At the end of two furlongs Rapier was a long last. a good dozen lengths behind the leaders. Eaton Bells headed Lava in the dip, and looked a winner a furj long from home, but Rapier was nntting in a great run on the out- : side, and flnishing brilliantly the favourite got up to win bv a tongi h from Eaton B^lls. who beat Booster hv half a lenffV Gold " Brick and Solrose were next.
