OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB.

I | ANOTHER WET DAY. i - i FRESCO WINS CUPo The ill-luck that has dogged the Oamaru Jockey Club as far as weather is concerned for its recent race meetings, was again in evidence yesterday when the jfirst day of the autumn fixture was held. After a period of fine weather rain set in early yesterday morning and continued steadily, though lightly, throughout the forenoon and until after the third race. The weather then clejared temporarily, another light shower falling after the fifth race and a fairly heavy downpoor was expei'ienced during Ihe running of the last race. The adverse weather conditions affeeted the attendance somewhat, but it was surprisingly good under the circumstances. Despite the rain that fell the track was in splendid order and the times registered xvere quite good. For the seven races carded the sum of £8931 10s was put • through the machine, compared with £10,250 for eight events on the opening day of the autumn meeting last year. All the arrangcments were efficiently carried out and the stewards were able to have an easy time, no inquiries being necessary. During the afternoon the Municipal Band braved the efements and provided a number of very enjoy- | able selections. The principal event, the North Otago Cup, was contested by a' field ! of seven and a spirited finish bei tween Fresco and Receipt sa\v the ; j former get the verdict by a ?«9ad. , ! The handsome trophv was present- : ed to the successful owner, Mr D. j ! H. Roberts, by the president, Mr j ! W. Gardiner, who, though unable j \ to leave his car, took a keen inter- j est in the day's sport. One of the | i most popnlar wins of the day was ; | that of Mr O. R. Wise's filly, Trip- | j away, which was warmly supporti c-d by the public, the two-year-old scoring its first win in convincing ; fashion. Results : —
