SEVERAL UGLY INCIDENTS.
Received Monday 1.18 a.m. SHANGHAI, March 21. A 'general strike has commenced. Trams and buses ceased at noon, other services following, including Chinese concerns. Nationalist flags have been hoisted in thousands throughout the international and Fx-ench settlements welcoming the Cantonese. There has beexi considerable rioting in ihe na-\iv-e city, Cantonese sympathisers capturing three native polioe stations. Many rioters were shot. There were several ugly incidents on the settlenxentb oundaries rioters attempting to force an entry. British sentx'ies at the outposts and boundaries on the intex'-settlement have been quadx-xxpled in anticipation of the mobs storming the barricades. The bulk of the Shanghai Defence 1 Force are occupying lines near the international settlement and awaiting the Cantonese fqrces. Seven Yhoxisand1 of these are marching on Shanghai. It is not expected that they will attempt to enter the foreign settlements, owing to ihe presence of Bx-itish troops who have orders to resist.
