AMERICANS COME ASHORE.
The capture of Shanghai places the Southerners in nominal control of China south of the Yangtse, except Nanking. It is not yet clear whether the arrangements under which Shanghai was taken include Nanking. All is fairly quiet in the foreign settlements. There is no anxiety among the foreigners thanks to the presence of the troops. T-his morning twelve hund'red Ameriqan marines with colours flying and fixed hayonets and machine •guns marched through the settlement. Shanghai volunteers were ordered to stand by in readiness for mobilisation as a precautionary mpasnre. I
