CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The first Test match, New Zealand v. Melbourne Cricket Club's team opened to-day in perfect weather. The wicket and outfield were in excellent order. New Zealand had the luck of the toss, but, after a promising beginning. their innings closed for the poor total of 190. Blunt, the opening batsman, stayed at the wickets for an hour and a half for 47, and, when going well, mishit a short pitched one from Warwick Armstrong to give Ebeling a catch. Page on his first appearance ip the New Zealand side made top score, 67. Ile was ninety-. two minutes at the wickets, hitting other batsman to make a stand. six fours.
