LEADING TOWNSMAN SHOT.

GISBORNE, Last ' Night. Shortly after 9 o'clock this evenin gthe liody of Thomas Manus McGeehan, a prorqinent business man and manager of Common, Sheiton & Co., was found in the vicinity of his residence, death having resulted from a gunshot wound in the head. McGeehan had been troubled by dogs worrying his sheep in the maize on his property and in the afternoon he left the house with the intention of shooting dogs. As he did not return a search party went out and found the hody near a fence on ihe maize patch with the gun on the other side. Deceased was 37 years of age and leaves a widow and four children, the youngest-a few weeks old.
