Received Thursday, 12.5 a.m. SHANGHAI, March 16. Practically the entire Cantonese army is concentrating for an attack on Nanking. The theatre of war has thus shifted one hundred miles north of Shanghai. The Cantonese are reported to he within thirty „ miles of Nanking. Heavy fighting is progressing. The direct menace to Shanghai is temporarily removed, but the authorities are not relaxing precau- ] tions and preparations. - Fifty Spanish bluejackets landed yesterday. Five hundred French colonial infantry from Indocha i are due shortly. Never in his- j tory has there been such an in- I ternational assembly of navies as are now in Shanghai har- ! bour. Every nation owning a ! navy is represented. The con- | gestion is added to by idle merchantmen. - In view of the apprehension felt as to the fate of Shanghai, the commander of the Cantonese has issued a declaration requestiri'g Shanghai to observe strict neutrality, promising protection of foreign lives and property. He requests the foreign forces to maintain peace within the Settlement.
