BERLIN, March 14. Germany's phenomenal mercantile marine recovery has heen emphasised by Her Cuno's declaration at a congress of German shipowners to the effept that the six hundred thousand tons left by the .Versailles Treaty has already been raised to three million two hundred thousand, or two million below the prewar standard. He pointed out the great moral effect produced by the reappearance of German ships throughout the world as an evidence of Germany's unbroken vitality. A signifiicant point was, he said, that forty per cent of thje commercial fleet is less than fiv-e years old, whereas the world's average was sixteen per cent. Furthermore German ships were superior in unloading and loading safety devices and speed, especially the freighters. He also emphasisod that the whole of the pi;e-war long distance routes had been recaptured and while the English shipyards were at a comparatively low ebb, German yards wei'e working overtime.
