- NELSON, Last Night. The departure of the Duchess of York shortly after nine on Sunday morning was wivnessed only by a few people. The gathering of ihe public* at the Uommercial Hotel was composed mostly of those who happened to be passing by and noticed the preparations for dlparture. As the Duchess crossed the footpath to the waiting molor car she was accorded a quiet but very sincere farewell. This took the form of handclapping. concluding with cheers as the cars moved away. The Duchess charmingly acknowledged the farewell. At P01T Nelson also a number of people collected, and as the Royal pinnace swung round and headed for the harbour entrance the Duchess waved a farewell to Nelson. Her Highness carried a bouquet presented by the Mayor and Mayoress. The day was beautifully fine but a fairly heavy swell was coming down the ba> from a storm outside. This causecl the pinnace to toss about a good deal. The Renown was swung round, affording smooth water at the gangway and the party boarded without difficulty. All the oflicial party, with the exception of Mr Ardell (the Government representative. who is proceeding' ovei'land to Christchurch) , accompanied the Duchess to Wellington. It is understood that some of .them will go south to rejoin the Duke on Monday evening.
