.JECTIOXS TO VALUATIONS. \ sitting of thc Assessment Court . 's held yesterday, Mr H W. Bun- • S M. presiding. J'lie following applieations for a .luction in the valuations were mproved: — Bobert John Wright. Mary Sarah Tripp and Jessie Har**iet Holland. The apphcation of Yicfor Herbert Bremnex-, M. J. V. Park. Mary Walker and Tane McLean were dismissed. Mr L. H. Sumpter. who appeared for sevcfn ratepayers, said that' since the last valuaiion the B01ough Council had erected a settling raiik in the north end and the smell was so bad that no one would live there if he could help it. As a result the capital value had deprecated. The borouah valuer (Mr E. A. Atkinson) said the engineer had told him there was no offensive smell. Mr Bundle said it could hardly be suggested that, if there 'were ar. unpleasant smell in a certain Iocality. the houses in that locality would have the same .capital value as those erected where there was no smell. Mr Atkinson pointed out that . three houses had been purchased ■ since the tank was put in. The Magistrate said he would fix a- special day for the hearing of the objections and adjourned them till April 5. On behalf oi th'e Unioii/Bank. M" W. K. Tomlinsop said was ne' objeciing to the actuaf valuatior but to the relation it^.hore to othc properties. The Union Bank was assessed "at £405 compared with Ihe Bank of New South Wales £288. the National Bank £300 and the Bank of New Zealand £250. The Magistrate said there seemed to be some grounds for objecting to £405 when it was compared with other properties. Mr Atkinsoh: There is a great difference in the age of the buildings. The aciual valuation was not objected to. The Magistrate said u th'e valuaiion was not objected to that w&s the end of it. It was for the bank to approach the Council to find out how the other valuations were arrived at. The Magistrate decided to adjourn the hearing. 1. Mr J. C, ,Hjorring, vvhd appeare'd for Annie Boyle, proprietress of the Queen's HoteQL stated that the application was before the Court last year when the valuafion had been redirced from £730 to £416. This year the hotel ahd land were put up to £500. Mr Atkinson had made a statement aboy.t the purchaser increasing the rentals of the shops That was quite trae, hut the Coun . cil had. received mcreased rates. The Magistrate asked the valuer if he had any evidence to show that the- position was different 4o what it was last year. Mr Atkinson- Not in the house itself.
