The Terranora succeeded in laying tho new single-core cable across the Strait today, aim by 430 the Telegraph Department were cnambled to transmit messages across it. The ilup'ox is being used, and highly satisfactory results are attained. The Terranora will now bo engaged in picking up the broken three-core cable. An inquest on the bodies of Isabella Patrick and William Patrick, mother and son, who were fataljy burnt at a fire in Tory Place on Friday night, took place to-day. l)r Ewart, medical superintendent of the Hospital, said the most serious burns on the woman wore at the top of the thighs and the lower part of the back. The 'ogs were I burned t\> a little above the knees. The face was much burnt, and there were Blight burns on the chest. Both arms wore extensively burnt. She never recovered from the *hock, but became conscious on Sunday. She told him she* felt faint, and went to lie down, but did not remember any more Tho whole damage might have been done in a minute. The immediate can so of death was a shock from die burns With regard to the child, he said the whole surface o? the body was burned, tho deepest burns being on the hips. Tho face was extensively burnt. Evidence wai given that Vatriok waa evidently drunk on the night of the fire. The coroner declared that if the jury wero of opinion that the man was in such a condition from drink as to be unable to take steps to save his family as a sober man they would be justified in returning a verdict tantamount to manslaughter! The jury returned a vtrdict of accidental death, and added a rider that if the man and wife had been sober the jury cannot but think tho fire would have been discovered sooner and life saved. High praise was paid to Moloney and Haugham, who got the people out of the house. Patrick still lies at the hospital in a serious condition, and little hopes are j entertained of bis recovery. This afternoon the Premier informed & deput»tion from the Scenery Preservation Society who urged the removal of the c»b shelter at the Queen's wharf, that in hh opinion the building must be removed. He suggested that a petition of cit'zens to the C-ty Council asking for the removal should be got up in order that the Council might) take the initiative itself without tho necessity for Government intervention. 'I he case of the Jut'and Fht (Waipori) Gold Mining Company, Limited, v, M'lndoe, the hearing of which began in the Court of Appeal to-day, is of great irapoitance to the mining interest, and to farmers in mining districts. The appeal is from the decision of Mr Justice Williams, granting an injunction reflfruning the appellant company from o Trying on dredging in the Waipori River, on the ground of the pollution of the river and the shoaling of iho Waipori Like by rea«on of the silt proceeding from the works. Tho case in being heard by the Chief Jus 1 ice, and Justice Richmond and Justice Oonolly. Messrs Husking and FindUy are appealing for the appellant compiny, and Mr F. R Chapman for the respondent. Important poiuta are being argued as to riparian rights in mining districts, and nn to how far the right to pollute may be acquired in such district! by prescription, and by tin aequiasencs of riparian proprietors.
