A meeting of the creditors of Arthur John Cuming, manager of " Woman and Man," An entcr'ninment la'ely opened here, was held to-day. The liabilities were staled .t L 595 17s, and the assets L 377. Bankrupt's statement was to (ho effect that he had been asked te run an entertainment in aid of S*. Mnrj's Roman Catholic Schools. He sketched oat the p!an of the present entertainment, which was approved bj Father Le Menant dcs Chesuais. He hired the theatre, had handbills printed, and made other arrangements, when he received a lettar from tie priest that as bo hid no money he would not be made responsible for any loss incurred on account of the show. If Cuminga, however, saw his way to getting enough money to run it from advertlaementa and intending exhibitors well and good. The bankrupt then continued the affair on his own responsibility, but intended to hand any profit to the school for the benefit cf which it had been planned. At the end of tbe first week of the show he found he had not enough money to pay the reot of the theatre, snd after sotno negotiations with the landlord, the employees and performers took orer the •how for what they could make of it. The bankrupt stated that by a verbal arrangement with the parish priest he wm to recaire 25 per cent on any profit orer L6OO, the amount of the school debt. If the profit was below L6OO he was to receive nothiucr. After the examination of the bankrupt had been concluded, the meeting adjourned so that Father Le Meuant dea Cheanais might by heard. W. VV. Collins, M.H.R., has received a telegram from the Hon. W. P. Reeves that the petition for enquiry into the management of the Christchurch hospital will be plaoed before the Cabinet.
