THE NEW DIPHTHERIA CURE.

Dr. Erson, who waa in charge of the diphtheria caee successfully treated ab Auckland with anti toxin, states that the attask wan of a very virulent elm acter, the membrane covering the whde back of the throat', also the nasal passage. The lymphatic glands all round the throat to the back of the neck were nob only inflamed, but the patient was also suffering from albuminuria. A doae of Behring's antitoxin was injected, followed by a second within bix hours. After twelve hours there was no eflecb at all to be noticod upon the membrane, nor was there any physical reaction the Bame as in tuberculin. The first constitutional effect noticed was the subsidence, within twelve hours, of all the innV mation of the hmpbatios, followed in Ruothor tweUo hours by the Bbeddiog of the membrane from the various portions where ib was aecrotod. A third injection was given to the patient), who is now on a fair road to recovery. Thoro is no doubt in Dr. Erson's mind tbat, if the life has nob been Bayed by its instrumentality, certainly tbe effects following bhe iujection Bhowed it to be really an antitoxin — thab is, ib destroyed the germ of the disease in the system. Thab is conclusively proved by tbo fact that) the inaction, did nob attack the membrane itself, bub affected the germ in the system, which was followod by the ebedding of the membrane from the throat.— N.Z.
