FROZEN MEAT.
Nelson Brothe ■' reporfj dated London Varch 22nd, contana the following paragraphs : New Zealand MultoD.— Tho Dorio, Ringatira, and Rimubaka, brought altogether 08,235 carcases, a total for tho year, to date, 203,920 compared with 95,738 last yoar, in additon *o prenenb heavy stocks, and prospective arrivals, that makes the situation moat serious, and the outlook for the futuroof tho trade mosb unpromising. Week by week prices have given way, and now Btand \<\ to £d per lb below our lasb month's quotations, and though vilues have reached a lovel, seldom, if over, i ttaioed before, comaumption is not increased, or demand stimu'ated, and the outpub is no greater than ib was a year ago when prices ruled lid per lb higher, a very marked contrast b) the Home-bred sheop trade, which ooui'imuds excoptional'y high ratef. The hope that tho lack of finish, so nolicpuble last yoar, would be \m\ roved on whon the new season's mutton camo to hand, has, ao far, not been realised, and tho condition, and quality of much received have been far from prime and this wanb of condition and finish diminisbej the formerly recognised superiority over Australians, and Plates and better eorts of which compoting with New Zealands, render the prospecb of enhanced values a remote one. lh) beat Cant r'm y sheep now offered with difficulty realise 3^l to 3]d per lb, may be sold ab Jd lo Ad per lb le r a money. Dunedini and Southland?, when pub on the market, have made 2jd to 2?d per lb, North Island can hardly be quoted ab moro than 2}d per lb, the bulk sold have made that, a fair lot Jd higher, To adJ to the unpopularity of tho meat the use of tho barbed metal staples, so often animadverted on is still persisted in. Witbin the lasb few davß sheep and lambs from Wellington and Chriatchurcb, ex recent arrivals, disfigured with them, have been offered for sale in the Central Meat Market. New Zealand Lamb. — The Doric, ll.ingatira, and Rimutaka added to Btocka 35,741, makiDg receipts for the year, Gi,308 compared with 20,305, the same date lasb year. There has been no general demand for lamb, it is is too early in the yoar, and this season is a late one. A limited number have been marketed and cleared at prices ranging from 4',d to 4£d per lb. A few may have made come money, but the best on offer have of late been attainable at prices quoted. High quality is bub sparsely represented so far this year. A few really prime parcels have come to band, but the bulk show lack of ti< ish, and wanb of condition, and there are somo lots co poor and poverty-stricken, that they should never have been sent Home Lambs of 22lbs and 231ba bub little more than pay expenses, and bring discredit on tho breed.
