The Secretary to the Oamaru Har« hour Board wrote askt'ng to be supplied with a separate valuation roll for the portion of the Oamaru Harbour dis« tricb within the Waimate County rating district Request granted, A formal resolution to the Council's inbeution to strike a general rate of 9-lGths of a penny in the X was agreed to, as was also a resolution fixing the Timaru Harbour rate ab 2-lGtba of a penny in the £. Mr Murphy moved a resolution that the road formation a Hakaberamea be proceeded with, in order thab work may be given to the unemployed, and thab the work be clone by day labor. Mr Murphy was asked what wago he was in favor of giving. He replied that he bad lefb ib oub of bis resolution so thab the Council could fix the amount, bub he thoughb Gs a day would only bo a fair thing. The men would have a long way to go. The money would not come out of rates but was money thab had accurred from thirds, and there was enough to complete roads. He did nob see, therefore, why they should nob pay fair rates. The Chairman said 63 was too much. They were nob in a position bo pay high rates, and the facb should bp known. He thought 5s a day as much as should be paid. Several members favored letting the work in two contracts by tender on the cooperative plan. Mr Manchester thoughb a month's delay would do no harm, and at members' suggestion the resolution was withdrawn. — Waimate Times.
