THE RAILWAY SPECIAL RATES.
Mr Holmes drew the Minister's attention to the charges by tho railway of 12* 6d betwton Oamaru and Dunediii. Tim reduction had injured the trade of the port, as there was now no trade but ween Oamaru and Dunedin oastwiso. Mr Holmes re>td a statement setting forth tho loss to the port. Mr Cadman : This was tho first application that he had Iml to raise rates. They wanted to take Ll4OO oft the mi I way a by raising tho rates and send it by the steamer to give that revenue to the Board. Mr Meek pointed out that goods could bo railed to and from Oatn<tru and back to Hampdon cheaper than from Dunedin to Hampden. Mr Cad mm pointed out that the position was an awkwaid one for the Board ; but it seemed to him that thore would be a reduction in railway ratoa bec*uso tho people hnd built the railways and they could carry tho people's traffic. The roads were cut up by trao'ion engines, and that traffic should be carried by tho railways. Mr Meek thought thero should be uniform rates. Mr Cadman believed that it would come to that. Tho Government had made concessions and looke I forward to making more; but they cpuld not go ino backing up the tanfl haphazard, and trust to Providence to bring them out. They would have to take time, and the Board's position would be considered.
