ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
MAIIENO. Tho following is the annual report of the Mnheno School Committee : 41 Your Committee have pleasure in reporting that during tho past year tho attendance has boon lather higher than in any previous year. The number on tho roll and average for the several quarters has been as follows :
The plan adopted by previous year's Comniitteo of giving prizes for go d attendance has considerably increased the averago, and your Committee would strongly recommend thoir successors to continue tho syHtem. Tlio average is still, however, much lowor than it should bo in such a climate and with such toads as vre havo, being only for tho \vh >lo year 80 por cent of the number on the roll, in other words ono in u'vo of the scholars ia always absent. This surely discloses carelessnosß on tho part of some of tho parents. Tho amount nocossaiy to purohaso altcndanco prizos was provide,! from proceeds of a concert hod shortly after your Committee took office. Thanks aro duo to ft number of friends from a distance who assisted at this concert, to tho toachors who trained the children to take frheir put so credi ably, and to tho friends who s i liberally patronised it Tho net financial result was almost LlO. ConsidoraHlo permanent improvements havo boon effected both on tho school grounds and ut iho teacher's residence. At die latter a new fence has been erectod across tho nil way line where floods had complotoly destroyed the old one, tho lagoon has been drained with tiles, concrete stops made at tho front door, and asphalt paths laid round the house. For the latter work tho Committee paid for tho cement and tar, Mr Grant generously doing all the rest himsolf. At tho school asphalt pith? havo been laid, and tho play-sheds asphalted and seated. This woik is just finished at a cost of about Ll6, of which tho EJucition Board will pay lulf, and Mr Grant, as well as mombora of the Committee, havo subscribed towards iho Committee's share. A picnic was provided at tho Christmas bro.ikup. Mtssw Clark Bros, liberally supplied a traction engine and h'vo waggons, and convoyed about 300 of tho scholars and thoir friends toGloncoo, where a very enjoyable day wag spent. Tho annual examination took place in September, when Inspectors Goyen and Fitzgerald expressed themselves well ploised wi'h the stato ff the school Your Committee arc satisfied that in both departments the teachers work conscientiously and well, and that a thorough education is being imparted to the children. Tho balance to bo handed over to tho now Commiitoo after providing for all liabilities is only between L 3 and L 4, but over L2O has boon oxpended in permanent improvomonts, Ll3 hiving boon subscribed lonally towards the oost." On tho motion of Mr Rawson the report was adopted, and die following gt'iitlomon were elected for tho ensuing year : Messrs D. M. Foa, J. R. Elder, W. Riwson, R. Mitchell, J. Menzios, C, Norman, *md J, Adamson.
