NORTHERN AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
The annual ({(moral meeting of members of this Association took place on Saturday in tho lecture-room of the Mechanics' Tustituto. Thoro were present : — Messrs Duncan (chair), Connell, Donaldson, M'Donald, Ronayno, Dunlop, Falconer, Honour, Orr, Hedley, Mitchell, Littlo, Gemmell, Morton, Bromloy, W. Meok, Todd, Aikinhoad, Dr Webster, M'Auly, Korr, Young, Maclennan, Patorson, Craig, J. Bee, Scott, W. Turnbnll, J. Sponco, T. Henderson, A. M'Naughton, W. M'Kay, N. Fleming, and Church, Secretary. The minutes of last annual meeting wore road and confirmed. Tho Secretary then read tho following :—
AXNUAL KErOTtT. Your Committee havo much pleasure in submitting the usual report of the work of the Association for the past year, and have to congratulate the members thereof upon the success which has attended the proceedings of tho Society. The annual parade of entire horses was held on tho Show Grounds on tho sth October last, and although tho number exhibited was not large, tho quality of tho animals was considered excellent. There were entered 12 draught horses, 4 thoroughbrads, »nd I pony. In regard to this show of entires, tho members of tho Association may deem it advisable to suggest to the incoming Committco tho propriety of offering a bonus of somo considerable value, in order to secure tho sorvicos of the best draught entire to the district, as is done in Scotland and in somo parts of tho Colony. Tho annual show of live stock, implements, grain and seeds, and dairy produce, took- place on the 15th and 10th of November last, and was, in point of tho number of entries and quality of the exhibits, the most successful exhibition hitherto held by tho Association. The entries wero as follows :— Horses, 260; cattle, 145; sheep, 213; pigs, 2 ; poultry, 37 j dairy produce, 129 ; cured moats, 27 ; implements, 16 } buggies and harness, 0; broad, 16; flour, grain, and seeds, 101 ; wool. 4 ; sheep dogs, 10 ; extras, 10. Total, 983 ; showing an increase of 2(>6 over 1876, and realising for entry money a sum of L 202 Os 6d. Your Committee arc pleased to state that tho exhibition of gram and seeds was larger and in every respect represented more adequately tho capabilities of the district than tho show of tho previous year. Tlio number of visitors to the show was very much larger than in any former year, and it may reasonably bo expected that every successive show will become moro attractive, and be bettor attended. Tho net money received from tho sale of tho gates and booth privileges was L 420 16s 9d, an advance on tho year 1876 of Lll9 6s 6d. Tho valuo of tho prizes awarded amounted to L 450. Tho Hon. Treasurer's accounts and tho books of tho Association havo been duly audited by tho Auditors, Messrs G. It. Taylor and Henry Aitken. A credit balance with tho bank of LlO6 2s 6d is shown, together, with cash in tho hands of tho Secretary of 19s, making a total oath credit of LlO7 Is 6d on tho 31st March last. There is also lodged with tho bank a deposit of Ll5O, bearing interest at 5£ per centum. By the statement of assets and liabilities attached to tho balanco sheet, it will bo noticed that the total available balanco is L 224 2s. Your Committee regret that thoy cannot state tho oxact number of members for the past year, inasmuch as a few of those gentlemen who undertook to collect subscriptions have not made their returns. The amount of subscriptions and donations received up to the 31st of March was LlOO 10s ; and when tho returns are all in, it may bo calculated there will bo about LBO additional — a result not equal to some previous yoarB. Your Committee desire to record their thanks to tho donors of the privato prizes, amounting to a considerable sum — M'hich added greatly to tho interest and attraction of tho show. With a view of testing tho comparative capabditics and merits of tho reaping And binding machines lately introduced into this Colony, your Committee instituted a practical trial and offered prizes. The trial took place on the farm of Mr Potor Orr, who kindly allowed tho use of a crop of oats for the purpose. Thoro woro throo entries on tho occasion, and the decision arrived at is known to you all. The attention of your Committoo has been drawn to tho desirableness of having established an Association of such a kind and extent as will havo for its main object the holding of Colonial shows to tako place successively in the various principal contros of the Middle Island. Your Committee, after duo consideration, are unanimously of opinion that such an Association would prove of groat benefit to tho country generally ; and do, therefore, recommend that tho menbers should pass resolutions expressing their wish to havo such an organisation formed, and authorising the now Committee to unite tho co-operation of kindred societies. Your Committee thin It it must bo apparent to tho members of the Association that, in order to carry out tho shows — now so important and large — effectively and with duo regard to order and convenience, it is desirable that grounds of greater extent and suitability should be secured. Before tho Association can deal with the present reserve, either in tho way of selling or leasing, it is necessary that it should be brought under tho Act for incorporating such societies ; and your Committeo have to report that steps are now being taken to havo this effected without delay. If this meeting approve of this course, it will bo necessary that rosolutione be passed confirming tho action of tho Committeo, and instructing their successors with respect to the disposal of tho present show ground, and the acquisition of more suitable land. Your Committoo, in resigning their trust to their successors, desire to express a hope that the shows of tho Northern Association may continue to advance in usefulness and importance, and keep pace with the development of tho agricultural and pastoral interests of the district. For the Committee. J. Church, Secretary. On tho motion of Mr Young, seconded by Mr Falconer, tho report was rocoivod. TUB BALANCE SHEET. Tho Hon. Treasurer (Mr W. H. Ronayno) read tho balance sheet, as follows ; congratulating tho Association on its satisfactory financial position :—: —
Church had only received L4O a-yoar and it was suggested that if a fair sum were paid, Mr Church's servicos might possibly still bo obtained. Mr Young proposed, and Mr Kerr seconded, that the salary bo LBO per annum. Mr Hedley moved, and Mr Geinmell ■oconded, as an amendment, that the amount bo L5O. Mr Falconer proposed, and Mr W. M'Kay seconded, that the salary bo LOS. Mr N. Fleming objected to the proposed increase of salary. The Secretary's duties wero not so onerous as somo raoinbers seemed to suppose, the larger part of the work being done by sub-committoos. For a few days before the show no doubt the Secretpry's time was pretty fully employed, but during the remainder of the year thore wore only meetings onoo a month, and he thought tho salary at present paid was ample for those duties. On a vote being takon, Mr Hodloy'a amendment was carried, and the salary was consequently fixed at L5O. Mr Church «till declined to acoopfc offico, and pointed out that the Secretary of the Canterbury Association, whoso dutios were, if anything, lighter than those of tho N. A. and P. Association, roceived L2OO for his servicos. Ho had labored very hard for the succoss of tho Association, and must say ho did not quite relish Mr Fleming's remarks. On consulting the rules it was found that the appointment of Secretary rested with tho Committee, and it was resolved to ask Mr Church to continue to act • until tho appointment of his successor. Tho meeting then proceeded to elect sixtoen membors of Committoo in place ( of as many retiring in rotation. Tho names of 28 gontleinen ha^ng I been proposed a ballot was taken, and ; tho following were oloctod, viz. : — Mossi's Duncan, Monlove, Todd, Gemmoll, Maci lennan, P. Orr, Webster, Donaldson, I Borrio, Spenco, Chrystal, Steward, Korr, Stevenson, I3romlo3', and W. Young. | On the motion of Mr Connell, seconded » by Mr Hedley tho meeting thon, after passing a voto of thanks to tho chair, adjourned until Thursday next at 1 p.m.

Treasurer ; on the motion of Mr Falconor a like vote to the out-going Vico-Prosi-dents, Messrs Duncan and Orr ; on the motion of Mr Korr, to the Auditors ; and on the motion of Mr Dunlop, to the Secretary, Mr Dunlop remarking that although the Secretary was paid, the remuneration he received waa not adequate to the aervioes he rendered.
ELECTION OP OFFICERS, &O. The following gentlemen were proposed for tho office of President, viz., the Hon. M. Holinos and Dr Webster. Dr Webster said ho would be glad to withdraw in favor of Mr Holmes, but his proposer objected. A ballot then took place, resulting in the election of the Hon. M. Holmes. For}Vice-Prosident» there were proposed Messrs M. Morton, H. Connell, Dr Webster, H. Honour, John Donaldson, T. Henderson, 0. Todd, W. Young, W. Meek, J. Gemrnell, ana J. Spence. The six last-named gentlemen having declined to accept nomination, a ballot took plnco as regards Messrs Morton, Connell, Honour, Donaldson, and Dr Webster, and resulted in the election of Messrs Morton and Connell. Mr W. H. Ronayne was re-elected Troasurer. For Secretary, Mr Church was proposed for re-election, but said that after six years office he propoaed to be relieved from tho duties. Mr Young said the salary attached to the office was far 100 small. After discussing tho matter, it was urged that the salary should be increased, a* the work had so greatly increased. Mr
