Government Notice.
"VTOTICE.^-The Public are requested to observe that business with the Land Office cannot be transacted by correspondence, but persons requiring information, or having business to transact, must attend personally or by an agent. This rule will be rigidly .enforced on and after the 1st of February next, the right by the Commissioner of Crown Lands to frank letters having been withdrawn. The receipt of letters sent through the Post will not be acknowledged, and such letters, if the postage be not prepaid, will be refused. W. H. CUTTEN, Chief Commissioner. ORDER IN COUNCIL, Constituting Oamaru ana "Waikouaiti Militia Districts, and altering the Northern Boundary ol the Dunedin Militia District, in the Province of Otago. Or. G-iiey, Governor. At the Government House at Auckland, on the 6th day of January, 1865. Present : — His Excellency the Governor in Council. WHEREAS, by an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand, intituled " The Militia Act, 1858," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor in Council from time to time to constitute throughout the Colony, or in any part thereof, Militia Districts, and 6uch Districts from time to time to vary, and to designate the Militia of any such. Districts by the name of a Regiment, Battalion, Corps, or Company. Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor, by and with tho advica and consent of the Executive Council, in exercise of the above power, doth by this present Order constitute the following several Militia Districts, to be called and known by the names following, viz. : — THE OAMARU DISTRICT Comprises all that area bounded towards tho North by the Waitaki Uiver; towards the East by the Ocean ; towards tho South by the Southern Boundary Line of Blocks 3, 5, and 8, Otepopo survey District, and the 6aid line extended in an easterly direction until it intersects the circumference of a circle whose radius is fifteen miles in length, and centre the south-west corner of Block 2, Oamaru Survey District j and towards the West, by the circumference of the said circle. THE WAIKOUAITI DISTRICT. Comprises all that area bounded towards the North by the Oamaru Militia District ; towards the East by the Ocean ; towards the South by a line extending from Brinn's Point in a north-westerly direction until it intersects the circumference of a circle whose radius is fifteen miles in length, and centre ths south-west corner of Block 9 Moeraki Survey District ; and towards the West by the circumference of the said circle. THE DUNEDIN MILITIA DISTRICT. The boundaries of the Dunedin Militia District, as amended, now comprise all that area bounded towards the North by the Waikouaiti Militia District ; towards the East by the Ocean ; and towards the South and West by the circumference of a circle whose radius is twenty miles in length, and centre the Police Officeln the town of Dunedin. In reference to the above " Order in Council," I hereby call upon all persons liable to serve as Militia men in the Districts of Oamaru and Waikouaiti to send in their names to the Militia Office, Dunedin, on or before the 1st March next, in accordance with the following clauses of " Militia Act Amendment Act. I860:" Clause 2. Each battalion or company shall be divided into three classes ; the first class shall consist of all unmarried men and nil widowers without children, between the aues of 16 years and 40 years, both inclusive, who shall be called !Fir.->t-class Service Men ; the second class shall consist of all married men and widowers with children between the same a<*es, who shall be called Second Class Service Men ; and the third class shall consist of all men between the ages of 40 years and 55 years, who shall be called the Reserve Men. Clause 0. Be it enacted that every man, except as hereafter evcepted, between the aires of sixteen year3 and fifty-five years, being a British subject, and not an Aboriginal Native, who shall reside within the Colony, shall be liable to serve in the Militia ; Provided that the Judges of the Supreme Court, the Executive Council of the Colony, Members of the General Assembly, Superintendents of Provinces, Members of the Provincial Councils during Session, Clergymen K Priests, Ministers of Religion, Catechists, and all persons afflicted with lunacy or unsoundness of miad, deafness, blindness, or with any other disease or infirmity tnat may render them unfit for service (such disease or infirmity being duly certified by a medical man appointed by the Governor), shall be exempt from serving on such Militia. Clause 7. The senior officer of every Battalion or Company, or any other commissioned officer appointed by him, shall enroll all the men liable to serve therein ; and any man who shall not, within three months after his becoming liable to serve, give in his name, age, and place of residence to such officer, in order to be enrolled, Bhall forfeit any sum not exceeding £5.
