THE MATAURA DIGGINGS, SOUTHLAND.
The 'Southland News' says: — " The Mataura diggiims continue to increase in exciting interest. Population is rapidly arriving from all quarters, and provision stores to supply the wants of the diggers, increasing in ratio with the need of them. Terrace sinking is beginning on an extensive scale, and most parties at work are satisfied with the result of their labors. We have it on good authority, that a party of four have realised nearly six pounds per man for four days' work, as an assurance that the prospects are good and likely lo continue. An experienced miner, after a fair trial, has returned to Invercargill for the purpose of takiag up his family. He reports thirteen parties at work wich the windlass, and lias no hesitation in describing the ground as " a permanent payable goldfield." Some of our neighbors who took up stores, have sent down considerable orders, and report very favorably. We see no reason to alter the estimate we formed a week ago, that an average of 10s to 14s per day may be obtained by all willing to labor, and understanding a little of the routine of mining operations.
