STEAM VESSELS LOST ON THE NEW ZEALAND COAST.
A great deal has been said by our neighbors at the North and those at the South relative to the wind and weather of Wellington, the difficulties and dangers of her coast, and the number of wrecks which have taken place here. Of course persons who have visited the other Provinces, know precisely how the truth of the matter stands, but those who have not been out of Wellington migKt be led to a belief that it was as stated. For the information of all parties, we publish the following return of steam vessels which have, up to the present time, been lost on the coast of New Zealand, and for which we are indebted to a~valued correspondent:—
It will thus be seen that no less than five steamers have been lost in Auckland and four in Otago, the two places which take the most credit to themselves in consequence of the few casual-
ties they have had, while in the Province of Wellington one solii ary instance can be pointed out, and we need hardly say that that was brought about, not in consequence of the coasting difficulties to be contended agains*, but simply through gross carelessness. Then in Auckland there was a steamer actually wrecked alongside the wharf while riding at anchor, and yet they tell us that they never have any wind" there. The losses in the other Provinces are comparatively trifling, Auckland and Otago being considerably in excess.—Wellington Advertiser.
