Having of late commented fully on the claims which this district has to urge on His Honor the Superintendent and the Provincial Council, that sufficient sums be placed on the estimates for necessary public works, and especially for providing sufficient Port accommodation here ; we noyv publish the addresses yvhich have resulted from tho resolutions of the public meeting reported last week. These are noyv in course of signature in toyvn and country, and in a few days will be sent to Dunedin, fully subscribed, for the purpose of presentation. To his Honor John llvdk Harris. Superintendent of the Province of Otago.. The humble Petition of the undersigned inhabitants of the Toyvn of Oamaru, and Settlers in the districts of Oamaui, Otepopo, and the Waitaki : Siiewetii—Having previously addressed your Honor respecting the urgent requirements of this district, and received a favorable reply, your memorialists beg now respectfully to urge the necessity of immediate steps being taken to carry out the recommendations of a special Committee of the last Session of Council, and to ask that your Honor yvill be pleased, in conjunction with your Executive, to place on the estimates for the Session about to commence a sum sufficient to carry out the recommendation of the Marine Engineer yvith respect to a Jetty or other improvements to the Port noyv so rapidly rising into importance; and also a sum of not less than £4,000 to be placed nt the disposal of the Toyvn Board for the completion of the Sewer, and the streets approaching tho proposed Landing-place, to finish the fence at the Esplanade, and for other necessary yvorks. Your memorialists also beg to call attention to the desirability of the erection or purchase of a small building capable of being used as a Hospital, and respectfully urge that a sum of say £200 should beplacedonthe Estimates for that purpose, payable on condition of a similar sum being raised in tho district—-the sum to be invested in Trustees to be appointed as required by law. The increased number of accidents arising from yvorks connected with stone and lime quarries, as well as the expense to the poor patients for medical attendance, render such an institution highly necessary. Finally, your memorialists yvould press upon your Honor's attention, as a matter connected with the Road Department, the need of an immediate improvement of the road up the Waitaki, by bridging the Whare Kuri—a work of inexpensive character, but requiring immediate attention, in order to render it available, if possible, for some portion of the heavy traffic of the wool sen sou Dated at Oamaru, the 10th day of October, 1864.

Council, setting forth the claims of the Town and District, and praying for the carrying out of certain improvements of the Port of Oamaru, and of certain very necessary works in this and the adjacent districts, which petitions were referred to a Select Committee, and favorably reported on. And whereas, since the report of the* Select Committee, town and rural lands have been disposed of to the value of about £45,000, making in all about £118,000 derived from the sale of land in this portion of the Province. And whereas it is proved by the Customs returns hereunto annexed, that the Customs revenue of the place is rapidly increasing, and the tonnage of vessels visiting it is very considerable. And having respect to the absolute necessity of finding an outlet for the produce now being raised in the district, which cannot be done yvithout increased facilities for shipment; and also having respect to the great advantages yvhich may be derived from the export of lime, and the very useful building stone found in the district, yvhich at present can only bo shipped at very groat expense and with great difficulty. Your Petitioners respectfully urge on the Council to give their assent during the present session of Council to such measures as may be necessary to enable the Government to carry out: — First—The improvement of the Port by the erection of a Jetty, and necessary works connected therewith. Second—The carrying out of the recommendations of the Select Committee of last session, yvith reference to the other urgent requirements of the district. Aud your Petitioners yvill ever pray, &c.
